Kassandra to Sithonia: Turn Your 2026 Sailing Trip into a Full Halkidiki Day

Stay in Kassandra. Sail from Neos Marmaras. Make the drive part of the experience.

If you are staying in Kassandra, driving to Neos Marmaras for a sailing trip can look like an extra journey on the map.

We think it should feel like the opposite: a chance to see two completely different sides of Halkidiki in one memorable day.

The drive is straightforward, a rental car is easy to use, and the route takes you past archaeological sites, bakeries, fruit stalls, honey producers, old villages, vineyards and pine forest. Add one or two stops before the boat, one after it, and the sailing trip becomes the centrepiece of a full Kassandra-to-Sithonia excursion.

And there is another advantage: when you sail directly from Neos Marmaras, you are already on the West Sithonia coast we want to explore. Compared with starting from Kassandra, there is less time spent simply crossing the Toroneos Gulf and more of the five-hour trip can be used for swimming, snorkelling, SUP and relaxed stops in coves and around the islets.

You do not need to do everything on this page. Think of it as our local menu for building a great day.

Why we may recommend Neos Marmaras on windy days

In summer, Halkidiki is often influenced by the Meltemi, the famous northerly and north-easterly Aegean wind.

With some north-east wind patterns, the sea around the Kassandra pickup area can become uncomfortable and, occasionally, unsuitable for the trip we want to offer. In those conditions, we may recommend Neos Marmaras on West Sithonia instead.

This is not simply a replacement departure point. It can actually be the better version of the day.

From Kassandra, a West Sithonia sailing trip has to cross the Toroneos Gulf to reach the Sithonia coast and later cross it again to return. From Neos Marmaras, the boat starts next to the sailing area itself. That means less sea-transfer time and more time where you came to be: in the water, at anchor, under sail and enjoying the coves and islets.

Sea conditions are different every day, so the skipper always makes the final operational decision according to the actual forecast and conditions.

The road to the boat is part of the excursion

The natural route from Kassandra towards Neos Marmaras brings you through the centre of Halkidiki and then down the west side of Sithonia. It is an easy self-drive route, and once you enter Sithonia the scenery becomes greener, with long stretches of pine forest, olive groves and glimpses of the Toroneos Gulf.

Our advice: do not make six stops. Choose one or two before sailing and one after. You are on holiday, not competing in a rally.

Breakfast stop: Gavanas Bakery, Kalyves

If you leave Kassandra early, Gavanas Bakery in Kalyves Polygyrou is a practical first stop for coffee and a Greek breakfast on the road.

Pick up a cheese pie or another savoury pastry, and if you prefer to bring your own extra food aboard, this is also a useful place to get sandwiches or snacks for later.

It is the kind of stop we like on a road trip: quick, local and useful rather than another tourist attraction.

Allow: 15-25 minutes.

Ancient Olynthos – for travellers who want some history

If you enjoy history, start your journey with somewhere very different from the usual tourist attractions.

Ancient Olynthos was one of the most important political centres of Classical Halkidiki. The archaeological site preserves the street plan and remains of houses of the ancient city, making it possible to understand how people actually lived rather than simply looking at isolated ruins.

It is an especially good stop before a sunset sailing trip, when you have more time during the first half of the day.

Good to know: in the 2026 summer season the archaeological site operates 08:30-15:30 and is closed on Tuesdays. Check opening hours again before travelling.

Allow: around 45-60 minutes.

Ormylia – buy the fruit where it grows

Around Ormylia, agriculture is still very much part of everyday life.

Instead of buying everything at a resort supermarket, stop for fruit here. Our local suggestion is Sonia in the Ormylia area for fresh seasonal fruit to take with you on the sailing trip.

Depending on the month, look for peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, melon, watermelon, grapes, tomatoes or whatever is genuinely in season.

The Ormylia area is particularly associated with vegetables, tomatoes, peaches, pears, olives and other agricultural produce.

This is not a sightseeing stop. It is a small piece of everyday Halkidiki – and that is exactly why we like it.

Allow: 10-20 minutes.

Nikiti – honey, revani, coffee and an old village

Nikiti is worth treating as more than a fuel stop. It is one of the best places on the route to pick up something genuinely connected with Halkidiki.

Take home Halkidiki honey

Nikiti has a long beekeeping tradition and is home to the Agricultural Beekeeping Cooperative of Nikiti. Look for local pine honey, forest honey or other regional varieties rather than a generic souvenir jar.

Honey is easy to carry, actually useful when you get home, and one of the products most closely associated with this part of Halkidiki.

Try revani in Nikiti

For something sweet, stop at Anatoli Patisserie and try revani, the syrup-soaked semolina cake that is a classic northern Greek sweet. If you are in full holiday mode, have it with ice cream.

Or simply stop for coffee

If you want an easy break, park near the waterfront, walk for a while and have a Greek coffee or something cold before continuing towards Neos Marmaras.

Or leave the modern seafront behind and drive up to Old Nikiti, where narrow streets, restored Macedonian stone houses, courtyards and the Church of Agios Nikitas create an entirely different atmosphere. The Halkidiki Tourism Organisation itself describes Old Nikiti as a place for travellers looking for something off the beaten track.

Travelling on Friday?

Friday is Nikiti market day.

The weekly open market usually operates approximately 07:00-14:30 and is a good place to buy fruit, vegetables, olives, herbs, honey, cheese and other local products.

One practical warning: Nikiti traffic

Nikiti can become busy in high summer, especially around the main junction and at peak arrival times. If your sailing trip has a fixed start time, leave earlier than the navigation app suggests. A twenty-minute coffee stop is enjoyable; twenty minutes watching the clock in Nikiti traffic is not.

Optional detour: Vourvourou & Karydi

Vourvourou is on the opposite, eastern side of Sithonia, so it is not a sensible detour before an 11:00 sailing trip unless you start very early.

But if you are booked on the sunset trip, or you are deliberately making a full day of Sithonia, it can be a beautiful addition.

Drive across from Nikiti towards Vourvourou and make a short stop at Karydi, where pale rock, pine trees and exceptionally clear shallow water create one of Sithonia’s most recognisable landscapes.

You do not need to turn it into another beach day – you will get plenty of swimming from the sailboat. Treat it as a walk, a photo stop and a chance to see the very different east coast before crossing back towards Neos Marmaras.

Best for: the sunset sailing itinerary, photographers, first-time visitors to Sithonia.

Then: the sea

Sail West Sithonia from Neos Marmaras

This is the centrepiece of the day – and the reason the Neos Marmaras departure is worth considering even when the weather is perfectly good.

Our Neos Marmaras sailing trips explore the coast and islets of West Sithonia, with time for swimming, snorkelling, SUP, sailing and relaxing away from the road and the busy resort centres.

Because we start on the Sithonia side of the Toroneos Gulf, we do not need to use a large part of the excursion crossing from Kassandra and then crossing back again. On the five-hour trip, this gives us more useful time around the swimming areas and coves. The exact route still depends on wind and sea conditions – but the geography works in your favour.

On our five-hour programme, the route can include the secluded Porto Carras coves, Kelyfos Island and the Spalathronisia islets, depending on conditions. Snorkelling equipment, SUP, drinking water, coffee or tea and a professional skipper are included.

For a shorter experience, choose our three-hour sunset sailing trip and watch the light change over the Toroneos Gulf from the sailboat.

Before or after sailing: discover Neos Marmaras

Do not rush back to the car as soon as the boat returns.

Neos Marmaras was founded by refugees from the Sea of Marmara and today climbs amphitheatrically above its harbour. Walk along the waterfront, watch the fishing boats and have a coffee or an early aperitif before continuing your day.

Travelling on Thursday?

Even better.

Thursday is Neos Marmaras market day, normally from around 07:00 until 14:30. It is one of the easiest ways to see everyday Greek summer life away from hotels and organised excursions.

Buy olives, honey, herbs, fruit or cheese and take a little bit of Halkidiki home with you.

Wine on the slopes of Mount Meliton

Domaine Porto Carras

Just outside Neos Marmaras lies one of the most interesting wine stops in northern Greece.

The vineyards of Domaine Porto Carras stretch across the slopes of Mount Meliton overlooking the Aegean. The estate offers wine tastings and vineyard experiences and produces wines from both Greek and international grape varieties.

Current published opening hours are daily from 10:00 to 20:30, but wine experiences should be checked or booked in advance.

Try Greek varieties such as Assyrtiko, Malagousia and Limnio, or simply stop to discover a completely different landscape from the beaches below.

Important: if you plan a proper wine tasting, use a designated driver or ask us about arranging a van with a driver.

Parthenonas – go uphill instead of back to the beach

A few kilometres above Neos Marmaras is one of our favourite stops in Sithonia.

Parthenonas is a preserved traditional settlement on the slopes of Mount Itamos, around 350 metres above sea level. Stone houses, old architecture, olive trees and wide views over the Toroneos Gulf make it ideal for an evening walk and photographs.

This is one of the places where going just a few kilometres inland completely changes the feeling of Halkidiki.

If you have finished the five-hour sailing trip during the afternoon, Parthenonas is an excellent stop before dinner.

Allow: around 45-60 minutes.

Finish with a proper Greek meal

After five hours on the water, this is a very good day to forget the hotel buffet.

Ta Kymata, Neos Marmaras

After several hours at sea, complicated food is not necessary.

Ta Kymata is a traditional family-run fish tavern on the waterfront of Neos Marmaras, established in 1950, with a focus on local fish, seafood and Greek dishes.

Order slowly.

Fresh fish, grilled octopus, mussels, salads, a little local wine or tsipouro – and nowhere else you urgently need to be.

It is a particularly nice way to finish the day before driving back to Kassandra.

Panos Fish Tavern

For another excellent seafood option within easy reach of Neos Marmaras, consider Panos Fish Tavern.

This works particularly well if you prefer to leave the centre of Marmaras rather than stay around the harbour. Fresh fish, seafood, salads and a slower meal by the sea are exactly the right ending after a day that has already included a road trip and a sailing trip.

Whichever you choose, in July and August it is sensible to reserve ahead for dinner.

Want something more bohemian?

Tristinika & Ethnik

If you have taken the daytime sailing trip and still have energy, there is another option.

Instead of immediately heading north towards Kassandra, drive south from Neos Marmaras towards Tristinika.

We are not sending you there for another swimming stop – you have already had plenty of sea during the sailing trip.

Go for the atmosphere.

Tristinika is a long, relatively undeveloped stretch of coast south of Neos Marmaras and is especially known for its sunset.

Ethnik Beach Bar has become something of a Sithonia institution: informal, alternative and very different from the polished beach clubs of Kassandra.

Stop for a drink, listen to the music and watch the end of the day.

This is an optional detour rather than part of the fastest route back to Kassandra.

Two easy ways to plan the day

If you book the 5-hour daytime sailing trip

Early morning: leave Kassandra with some time in reserve
Breakfast: Gavanas in Kalyves
Provisions: fresh fruit at Ormylia
Optional quick stop: Nikiti honey, coffee or revani
Main experience: 5-hour sailing from Neos Marmaras
Late afternoon: Parthenonas OR Domaine Porto Carras
Evening: dinner at Ta Kymata OR Panos Fish Tavern
Then: drive back to Kassandra

For the 11:00 trip, keep the morning simple. Olynthos and Vourvourou are better saved for the sunset itinerary unless you genuinely enjoy very early starts.

If you book the sunset sailing trip

This is the best option if you really want to explore Sithonia by road.

Morning: breakfast at Gavanas, then Ancient Olynthos if history interests you
Late morning: Ormylia fruit stop
Midday: Nikiti honey, revani and Old Nikiti
Optional detour: Vourvourou and Karydi for a walk and photos
Thursday: visit Neos Marmaras market
Friday: visit Nikiti market
Afternoon: Neos Marmaras and, if time allows, Domaine Porto Carras
Evening: sunset sailing
After sailing: late dinner in Neos Marmaras

Yes.

But probably one of the days you will remember from your holiday.

Driving is easy. And if you do not want to drive, ask us.

For most guests, renting a car for the day is the easiest option. The route is on normal paved roads, it gives you complete freedom to stop where you want, and a car also lets you turn a boat trip into a much bigger holiday experience.

If you would rather not drive, that is easy too.

We can suggest a local rental-car company or help you arrange a private van with a driver.

A driver is particularly convenient if you would like to include the Porto Carras wine experience or simply prefer not to navigate and park during a long holiday day.

So if the wind, the sailing forecast – or simply curiosity – brings you to Neos Marmaras, do not think of the drive as a transfer.

Make it an excursion.

Have breakfast where locals stop on the road.
Buy ripe fruit for the boat in Ormylia.
Take home honey from Nikiti.
Try revani instead of another international dessert.
Drive through the green side of Sithonia.
Spend more of your sailing trip swimming instead of crossing the gulf.
Walk through a stone mountain village.
Taste wine grown above the Aegean.
Finish with fish beside the water.

Then drive back to Kassandra pleasantly tired, with fruit bags, honey, salt in your hair and the feeling that you did much more than simply take a boat trip.
